IAPP-Argentina’s Webinar Discusses Education and Values

Buenos Aires, Argentina—"Education and Values: Suggestions and Challenges for the Day After” was the theme of a panel of parliamentarians on August 28, 2020. This Zoom meeting was organized by the Argentina chapter of the International Association of Parliamentarians for Peace (IAPP), with presentations by National Deputies Alicia Fregonese, Claudia Bernazza, and Victoria Morales Gorleri; and former National Senator Daniel Filmus, national minister of education from 2003 to 2007. These parliamentarians from different political parties cordially gave their contributions, moderated by Humberto Benedetto, Mercosur parliamentarian from Córdoba. Enrique Torrendell, executive director of the foundation Educando en Valores—Talentos Para la Vida, contributed as a civil society guest.
The event was suggested after June’s parliamentarian panel (*), where we discussed more open parliamentarians and with more citizen participation. This is related to education, which is often ignored and neglected because of political disputes or social urgencies.
Journalist Patricia Pitaluga, president of Acercando Naciones, shared with the panelists the various questions and concerns from the audience members, who had registered from different Argentinian provinces and many Latin American countries. The opening and closing were in the charge of Miguel Werner, secretary general of UPF-Argentina; technical coordination was in the charge of Emanuel Sayavedra, member of UPF-Argentina’s Governing Board.
This was the beginning of the IAPP-Argentina Lines of Action Series, which had more than 135 online connections and more than 200 registered people, mainly from Argentina and many Latin American countries. In the following months, we will address these themes: Development and Cooperation, Public Management and Transparency, Dignity and Human Rights, and Environment and Sustainability.

GOAL:
In our current challenging context, which could eventually deepen issues and conflicts in times of COVID-19, parliamentarians will address, looking towards “the day after,” one of IAPP-Argentina’s lines of action: Education and Values. Its goal is to “put on the agenda the importance of education, not only for labor competition, but also for cooperation in values and peace perspective. In a broader sense, knowing other cultures, ethnicities and religions, to improve dialogue, mutual respect, and interaction for coexistence and development.” This is a complex theme in the current context of crisis, which requires relevant, suitable perspectives, the contribution of different sectors, and where civil societies are called to contribute.
IAPP-ARGENTINA:
IAPP seeks to bring together knowledge, experience, and good practices of legislators and other areas to face the critical challenges of humanity and the planet: poverty and corruption, violence and extremism, environmental pollution and climate change, educational crisis and family breakdown, ethnical and religious conflicts, the threat of “new wars,” the world refugee crisis, territorial disputes, and so forth.
When the IAPP was launched in 2017 in Argentina, we established five lines of action in its opening statement: Education and Values, Dignity and Human Rights, Governance and Transparency, Development and Cooperation, and Environment and Sustainability. This follows the peace perspective posed by the Universal Peace Federation (UPF) from its premises of Interdependence, Mutual Prosperity and Universal Values.
BACKGROUND:
The “Parliamentarians for Peace” initiative began in 2001 through Ambassadors for Peace, seeking to empower a leadership that allows dialogue and cooperation for sustainable development from a peace perspective. Such vision was reaffirmed in 2005, at the 120-nation inaugural tour to establish the Universal Peace Federation (UPF), which has created various projects and peace programs. Aligned with this proposal, the IAPP was globally launched in Korea in February 2016. The IAPP was regionally introduced on October 11, 2016, in Asunción (Paraguay) and in Argentina on November 30, 2017, at the National Senate.
CONTEXT:
How can we put on the agenda the importance of education, not only for labor competition, but also for cooperation and teamwork, in values and peace perspective in societies that are multicultural, multiethnic and multireligious?
How can we claim the transformative role of politics, particularly of parliamentarians as representatives of the people, to propose and promote solutions to local and global issues and conflicts?
How can we overcome old dichotomies and struggles, including national and individual selfishness, to avoid more division and facilitate dialogue and mutual respect in order to work for the dignity of each individual and seek common good?
What are the innovative answers to countless challenges and the opportunities we currently have to think about sustainable development, reducing social and global conflicts, and restoring a good relationship with the environment?
