Dialogue & Alliance

New York, USA—Following up on the previous issue of Dialogue and Alliance (Volume 35, No. 1), we continue to publish the statements presented during the Universal Peace Federation’s Rally of Hope series, launched initially in 2020, and carried forward in 2021, with the theme of “Toward a Unified World of Peace.” In effect, this issue represents Part Two in the Rally of Hope series.

The Rally of Hope series emerged during the COVID-19 pandemic which disrupted so very much of ordinary life, including most face-to-face meetings. Shifting to a virtual format with an international-audience reach in the millions, the Rally of Hope provided a platform for UPF to continue its work to promote peace and development, accenting values of interdependence, mutual prosperity and universal values.

The Rally of Hope brings together a wide cross-section of world leaders from diverse sectors of society—government, religion, academia, the media and business—inviting them to share their wisdom and experience, and to offer their insights and recommendations toward addressing critical global problems. The fifth Rally of Hope, for example, featured presentations by David Beasley of the United Nations World Food Programme, Professor Sarah Gilbert, a vaccinologist from Oxford University, and H.E. F.W. de Klerk, the former president of South Africa and former Nobel Peace Prize recipient. We note respectfully that H.E. de Klerk has recently passed away, in November 2021. Former Vice Presidents Mike Pence of the USA and Mohammad Hamid Ansari of India spoke, along with others, including UPF Co-Founder Dr. Hak Ja Han Moon.

The sixth Rally of Hope featured the inauguration of a new UPF initiative called Think Tank 2022, a project that brings together leading experts from across the world with in-depth knowledge of the conflict on the Korean peninsula. Think Tank 2022 aims to lead an intensive effort to reach some form of breakthrough or rapprochement between the two Koreas, opening the way for improved political, social and economic relations between the two Koreas, tragically divided now for more than seventy-two years. The sixth Rally of Hope featured statements by H.E. Samdech Hun Sen, the Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia, as well as former UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and H.E. Chung Sye-kyun, former Prime Minister of the Republic of Korea. Former US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, former US Secretary of Defense Mark Esper, and former Speaker of the US House of Representatives Newt Gingrich also contributed to the discussion. The seventh Rally of Hope continued the focus on promoting peace on the Korean peninsula and included contributions from former US President H.E. Donald Trump, former Japanese Prime Minister H.E. Shinzo Abe, former Prime Minister of Portugal H.E. Manuel Barroso, former President of the Philippines H.E. Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, and former President of India H.E. Devi Gowda.

We close out this issue with three featured articles. Ambrose Mong reflects on the emerging power of China and its global implications; will that power be used for confrontation or confluence. Dr. Pradeep B. Deshpande offers insights on the essential need for religion and spirituality to promote racial harmony. And, finally, on the occasion of its re-printing, we feature an excerpt from Hon. Balmiki Prasad Singh’s volume,Bahudhā and the Post 9/11 World.

We extend to all our subscribers and readers the very best wishes for the coming New Year, 2022. Let us all do our best to build a world of lasting peace.
