UN World Interfaith Harmony Week

A World Interfaith Harmony Week observance took place February 7, 2012 in the UN General Assembly Hall on the theme "Common Ground for the Common Good." The President of the 66th Session of the General Assembly, H.E. Mr. Nassir Abdulaziz Al-Nasser, said in announcing the event: "In our conflict-ridden world, I believe it is important to recognize the historical good done by people of all faiths in many of the areas of the work of the United Nations as well as the current successful partnerships in various parts of the world between UN agencies and religious groups particularly in meeting the humanitarian needs of disaster-stricken people." Korça, Albania - Following its annual plan, the Local Peace Council in Korca commemorated World Interfaith Harmony Week on February 7. Although the weather was very cold and it was snowing heavily, the theme of "Interfaith Harmony and Korça Contribution" attracted participants and gained the attention of the national media.

Anse-la-Raye, St. Lucia - Mr. Remy Taupier, Secretary General of UPF-St. Lucia give a presentation about the common goals and values of religions to students in Anse-la-Raye on February 16. Afterwards, students gathered in small groups to discuss questions related to the presentation.

Montreal, Canada - Canadian Ambassadors for Peace and friends gathered in Montreal on February 20 in support of World Interfaith Harmony Week by reading prayers from the sacred scriptures of Jews, Christians, Muslims, Hindus, Sikhs, Native traditions and more. Important commentary by academicians, religious and political leaders such as Martin Luther King, the Dalai Lama, Hans Kung, and others set the tone for a lively exchange of testimonies and reflections on the meaning of peace.

Tegucigalpa, Honduras - With a video, readings, prayers, and lunch, UPF-Honduras celebrated World Interfaith Harmony Week on February 4 at the Peace Embassy. Other events included work on a medical clinic and an information booth at a park.

Several prominent academics joined the religious leaders in expressing their concern for the current state of affairs in the Middle East and the Korean peninsula.

Sultan Kudarat, Philippines - UPF-Philippines together with the Provincial Government of Sultan Kudarat on the island of Mindanao in the southern Philippines led by the Governor of the province, Hon. Datu Suharto T. Mangudadatu, Al Haj, celebrated the UN World Interfaith Harmony Week on February 6 with a flag raising ceremony at the Sultan Kudarat Gymnasium and Cultural Center.

Lusaka, Zambia - In accordance with the UN resolution to declare the first week of February as World Interfaith Harmony Week, UPF-Zambia held a one-day seminar on February 4 in Lusaka. The 50 participants included leaders of various faiths, students, NGO leaders, and Ambassadors for Peace.

Washington, DC, USA - Commemorating World Interfaith Harmony Week, UPF-DC held a dinner for distinguished speakers at The Washington Times on February 16 entitled: “Common Ground for the Common Good.” Nearly 100 guests from the diplomatic, NGO, religious, and civic communities listened in rapt attention to four distinguished speakers. Mrs. Tomiko Duggan, Director of the UPF Office of Embassy Relations, introduced the video of current UPF programs and Mr. Thomas McDevitt, president of The Washington Times, greeted the audience.
