M. Temer: Address to World Summit 2022, Summit for Peace

Address to World Summit
February 11-13, 2022

First, I would like to thank the Universal Peace Federation for the invitation that they sent me to the Peace World Summit 2022. This invitation is extremely honorable. In fact, everything that concerns peace, whether local or worldwide, deserves our applause.

For that very reason I also want to thank the Co-chairmen of the International Organizing Committee, H.E. Samdech Hun Sen, Prime Minister of Cambodia, and H.E. Ban Ki-moon, former Secretary General of the United Nations, with whom I became friends over my period as a public figure here in Brazil, as President of the Chamber of Deputies, as Vice President and as President of the Republic. I had the opportunity to live with His Excellency at the United Nations and I had the opportunity to meet him in several other countries where we held meetings of a universal nature.

I also especially want to thank Dr. Hak Ja Han Moon whose vision and work for peace has extended beyond her country, the Republic of Korea, and has spread throughout the world. I am a witness to this fact.

Therefore, the theme of this World Summit 2022, “Towards Peace on the Korean Peninsula,” is very timely, as it will bring development not only to the peninsula, but also to all of Asia and the world. It is a global meeting because the world deserves peace.

Through the World Summit, therefore, it is possible to promote the ideals of interdependence, mutual prosperity and shared universal values which has been the slogan of the UPF and its global network of Ambassadors for Peace.

I have to say that whenever you talk about peace, you naturally bring up the theme of development, the theme of harmony, the theme of the greatness of countries. That’s why I confess to you, at one point, still holding a public office, I was in the Republic of Korea and there I got to know the extraordinary full-time teaching that is practiced in South Korea. That’s what made me, when I assumed the Presidency of the Federative Republic of Brazil, produce a reform of secondary education with the creation of thousands and thousands of full-time teaching positions. Also, as I said to Brazilians, it has two aspects: an educational aspect, because the student learns much more, and, here in Brazil, there is a social aspect because the student is fed at school. This was an example that I brought back from my trip to the Republic of Korea.

That’s why I want once again to thank Dr. Moon for the invitation, and in fact you should even allow me to show this certificate of Ambassador of Peace that was granted to me and that ennobles me and naturally enhances my office where it is displayed.

In addition, I wish the usual success, an extraordinary success, to the Summit for Peace in the Korean Peninsula and in the world.

Thank you very much! Kansahamnida!
