Tradition of Africa Day
Africa Day is the annual commemoration of the 1963 founding of the African Union (AU). The African Union, comprised of 54 member states, has brought together the continent of Africa to collectively address the challenges that it faces. May 25th is African Liberation Day. Many African countries celebrate the hard-fought achievement of their freedom. This day is also an opportunity to celebrate African culture and successes. The celebration of Africa Day in many countries around the world shows the respect and acknowledgment from the other countries in the different continents to Africa. TheNew Yorkevent is the biggest outside of Africa which is celebrated in partnership between the African Union and the Universal Peace Federation as well as being supported by United Nations' representatives. In 2012 Africa Day Melbourne was successfully celebrated on the 26 May (see report below).
