Africa Day Observed in Georgia

Tbilisi, Georgia—African culture and history were appreciated by many Georgians during the Days of Africa organized by UPF-Georgia with local organizations.
The program was held from April 27 to May 10, 2015, to commemorate the United Nations declaration of 2015-2024 as the International Decade for People of African Descent.
Programs about African culture, history, as well as the experience of Africans who live in Georgia, were held in universities, schools and villages.
UPF-Georgia organized the events together with Lasha Shakulashvili, the Georgian Youth Representative to the United Nations. The main partner of the event was the UN Office in Tbilisi, the capital. The project partners were: Tbilisi City Hall, Zurab Tsereteli Museum of Contemporary Arts, Tbilisi State University, Free University of Tbilisi, Georgian Ministry of Education, Ministry of Youth and Sports of Georgia, as well as various media and other organizations.
On April 30, a lecture-discussion on "Relations between Georgia and the Countries of the African Continent" was held at Tbilisi State University. Eka Akobo, head of the Department of Asia, Africa and Oceania in the Georgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, was the main speaker.
As a part of the program, a video conference with the Georgian Embassy in South Africa was held. Georgian youth discussed with Bekoy Dvali, ambassador of Georgia to the Republic of South Africa, issues of bilateral cooperation, including education and volunteering. This was followed by a video conference with the Youth Representative from Kenya to the United Nations, Wambui Kahara, with whom the Georgian youth talked about African traditions and students from Africa.
On May 5, a meeting-discussion on "Africa through the Eyes of Georgian Travelers" was held at Tbilisi State University.
On May 9, the Free University of Tbilisi hosted the Georgian-Friendly African (soccer) Championship with the participation of four teams: Free University of Tbilisi (local team), Tbilisi State Medical University (African team), University of Georgia (African team) and International Black Sea University (local team). The football championship was followed by a friendly lunch, after which the participants received certificates and prizes.
On May 10, UPF held a planting ceremony for the "Tree of Georgian-African Friendship.” Representatives of Tbilisi City Hall attended the ceremony, which was held in the Square of Tolerance.
Also on May 10, the Zurab Tsereteli Museum of Contemporary Arts hosted "An Evening of African Culture," which allowed Africans living in Georgia to show elements of their culture: dance, songs and cuisine.
The Days of Africa in Georgia project received widespread publicity on radio station "Jacko," First Public Radio, GDS TV, Radio Liberty and Rustavi 2. In all of these broadcasts UPF was presented as the central organizer of the event.
