Peace Festival to Become Annual Event in Negros Oriental

Philippines-2008-10-22-Peace Festival to Become Annual Event in Negros Oriental

The Global Peace Festival-Negros Oriental was held from October 20-22, 2008, in Dumaguete, a bustling port city of over 100,000 residents; it is also a university town, with seven colleges and universities. Dumaguete is known as “The City of Gentle People.”

The GPF was held in conjunction with the province-wide celebration of the annual Buglasan Festival, a celebration of the local arts, crafts, music, and food. During the three-day event, a coastal cleanup project, with 900 high school students participating, was conducted along Dumaguete City Boulevard, in cooperation with the Department of Education.

The two-day International Leadership Conference gathered 250 leaders from different sectors of society. Present during the ILC were Dr. Henry Sojor of the Negros Oriental State University, Vice-Governor Jose A. Baldado, Vice-Mayor Woodrow S. Maquiling, Jr., City Councilor Antonio Remollo, the Assistant Superintendent of the City Department of Education, and the Provincial Administrator — who read the mayor’s speech on his behalf.

The Main Event, which was staged at the Sidlakan Negros Stage in Dumaguete, was attended by 5,000 people who came from different parts of the Province of Negros Oriental, located on the fourth largest island of the Philippines. Dr. Federico Niduasa read the Global Peace Address, which stirred everyone to own the vision of peace and unity among brothers and sister and to live as one family under God.

Because of the success of the event, the Provincial Government of Negros Oriental gave its approval for the Global Peace Festival to be held annually as part of the Buglasan Festival.

The Global Peace Festival in Negros Oriental is one of 12 planned for the Philippines in 2008, following up on the success of the Global Peace Festival in Mindanao in September.
