Cordillera Peace Festival Attracts Thousands

Eighty thousand people carrying the slogan of “One Family Under God” flocked to the Melvin Jones Grandstand at the Burnham Park in Baguio City on the island of Luzon on November 12, 2008 in celebration of the Global Peace Festival Cordillera.

Local government officials including Baguio City Vice Mayor Daniel Fariñas attended the main event and spoke before the audience. Dr. Michael Zablan moved the audience when he delivered the Global Peace Address on behalf of Dr. Hyun Jin Moon, the chairman of the Global Peace Festival.

A Peace Concert by famous artists including Billy Crawford, Hale, Kitchie Nadal, and Ms. Iya Villania followed the GPF Main Event.

An International Leadership Conference was held during the Global Peace Festival. Religious leaders and local officials learned conflict resolution techniques to help make them more effective advocates for peace in the countryside. Bishop Pedro Maglaya of the United Church of Christ in the Philippines challenged participants to teach humility as a way of defusing conflicts and making "the Philippines go back to her decency as a nation,” according to a report at inquirer.net. He also stated that the major religions of the world should work together because, according to a UN report, religion is a key issue behind 80 to 85 percent of all conflicts around the world.

The festival in Baguio City was one of 12 planned throughout the Philippines during 2008, building on the success of the Global Peace Festival in Mindanao in September.
