Planting a Garden and Distributing Food in Rio de Janeiro
Sunday, October 19, 2008
The Global Peace Festival (GPF) initiated a Social Impact Service project in the city of Rio de Janeiro in the Jacarepaguá district on October 19. Approximately 120 people participated in the activities of distributing food and clothing to less fortunate residents in the community, painting walls near the Residents Association, and generally cleaning up the community.
This was a great opportunity to show the community how the GPF is promoting a new model of peace and engaging in the construction of a peace culture through its service projects based on the motto, “One family under God.” The Residents Association and friends of Covanca (Jacarepaguá Reservoir), under the guidance of Mrs. Joana Severo, helped in this activity, together with the Collegiate Association for the Research of Principle-Brazil and members of the Family Federation of Rio de Janeiro.
Through another alliance between the Family Federation, the city hall of Rio de Janeiro, and the volunteers, a vegetable garden (100% natural) was created to help educate people about the joys and the value of doing voluntary work. This kind of project not only teaches a love for nature but can facilitate character development. In addition, there is a plan to later collect donations for the more indigent communities.
All of these local projects were part of a national outreach by the Global Peace Festival in Brazil.
