Addis Ababa, Ethiopia - It is with feelings of regret that we announce that His Holiness Abuna Paulos I, Patriarch of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church, passed away in the early morning of August 16 at the age of 76.

He was a very understanding man of God and advocated for peace among all religions and all the people of Ethiopia. Moreover, he always promoted peace and reconciliation in the region transcending race, nationality, religion, or culture. He was appreciated and loved by all peoples of the region.

Since 1992, His Holiness was Patriarch of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church, which numbers 40 million Ethiopians, half of the population. His full title was His Holiness Abuna Paulos, Fifth Patriarch and Catholicos of Ethiopia, Ichege (Abbot) of the See of Saint Tekle Haymanot, Archbishop of Axum, and one of the seven serving Presidents of the World Council of Churches.

At a meeting with the interfaith team of UPF-Europe on July 4, 2012, he was appointed an Ambassador for Peace and given a copy of the autobiography of UPF Founder, Rev. Dr. Sun Myung Moon. He stated that whoever is seeking world peace can only be a man of God.

We sincerely pray for His Holiness and for the peace of his soul in the spirit world. May God grant His grace and peace to H.H. Abuna Paulos I.
