Buenos Aires, Argentina—UPF-Argentina celebrated its accomplishments of 2017 at an event it held on December 21 at the House of Representatives in Buenos Aires city. Also at the year-end meeting, whose theme was “Share, Acknowledge and Celebrate” several Ambassadors for Peace were recognized.

After everyone sang Argentina’s national anthem, Mr. Alberto Lettieri, a scholar and researcher, briefly spoke about the history of the House of Representatives. This was followed by a musical performance by Mr. Alfredo Corales, a folklorist from Entre Ríos, who sang, “Las manos de mi madre.”

Four Ambassadors for Peace were recognized for their work:

Prof. Silvia Olguín: “For her dedication to collaboration, for her commitment to service and to the community; and for providing learning opportunities to adolescents and young people through dancing.”

Ms. Andrea Vega: “For her commitment to protecting the environment and promoting sustainable development, and for improving people’s lives through the Chacras Foundation of Buenos Aires. For promoting volunteering and fostering a spirit of solidarity through the many activities and projects she organizes.”

Ms. Rosetta Conti and Mr. Sergio Castellón: “For promoting values education through the Women’s Federation for World Peace and the Family Federation for World Peace [in Argentina]; for supporting UPF initiatives; for being great parents and grandparents, as well as an ideal married couple and a three-generation family.”

Also, a new Ambassador for Peace was appointed, Prof. Boleslao Mireslao Sawicki (Sabomir), founder of the Civic Parliament of Humanity and other organizations that promote values in the academic and diplomatic fields. Ambassadors for Peace Mr. Guido Vega  and Mrs. María Teresa Narváez spoke about Prof. Sawicki’s work for others.

Afterwards, Pastor Alba Rosa Contardo, a member of UPF-Argentina’s Peace Council and UPF International’s Global Peace Council, expressed gratitude for the experiences she had during the year and being able to participate in the inaugural Interreligious Leadership Conference (IRLC), which was held in November in Seoul, Korea with 400 representatives from 60 countries in attendance.

A number of individuals and organizations sent messages to be shared at the occasion. Among them were Prof. Ernesto Kahan, vice president of the World Academy of Arts and Culture (Academia Mundial de Artes y Cultura); Pastor David Calvo from the United Evangelical Lutheran Church; Swami Isidro Fernández, director of the Argentinian School of Yoga and Ayurveda; Mrs. Delia Del Castillo; the Environment, Life, Education and Sustainability Foundation (Fundación Ambiente, Vida, Educación y Sustentabilidad); the Peace Council in Argentina; writers Irene Aguirre and Ana Navone; and various Ambassadors for Peace.

I [support] all of you, and hope we continue to work together for peace, dialogue, and tolerance among Argentineans…..We need to [respect one another’s] beliefs, and each racial, social and political status, because every person pursues the happiness and wellbeing of their neighbors,” wrote Mr. Humberto Benedetto, a member of the Mercosur Parliament, in his message.

Also during the program, everyone viewed videos of several memorable events that took place during the year, including the Peace Road 2017, whose theme was “A United, Solidarity Argentina;” the celebrations of the International Day of Families the International Day of Peace; and the launch of the IAPP in Argentina at the Argentine Senate, which was held on November 30.

Young Ambassadors for Peace Kotoe Ainai, Hitomi Kageyama, Miki Sebata and Motomi Hirai performed music. UPF-Argentina director, Mr. Carlos Varga, gave a few words, and then everyone celebrated the 12th anniversary of UPF-Argentina with a toast and enjoyed lunch together.

UPF-Argentina also pays tribute to those who passed away this year: Mrs. Azucena Molla, who was an Ambassador for Peace since 2007 and a member of UPF-Argentina’s Peace Council since its founding, and Mr. Enrique Gino Micheli, who was an Ambassador for Peace since 2017 who was committed to helping people with disabilities through his nonprofit organization, Sin Diferencias (Without Differences).
