Rev. Dr. Sun Myung Moon, founder of the Universal Peace Federation, died on September 3 in South Korea. He was 92. He passed away at 1:54 a.m. local time from complications of pneumonia, surrounded by family, friends, and followers. A memorial service, celebrating his life and legacy, took place in Korea on September 15. See highlights of Rev. Moon's life, an obituary in The Washington Times, and messages of condolence.
More than 300 UPF Ambassadors for Peace made the long journey to Korea to attend the memorial services for Father Moon on Sept. 15, 2012.
Rev. Sun Myung Moon, the international religious leader and founder of the Unification Church and the Universal Peace Federation was laid to rest on September 15 in a series of moving ceremonies held in the mountainous countryside just outside Seoul that Father Moon loved so much in life.

"He said to me that, since football is the largest organization in the world and a very important means of propagating the message of peace, I hold a great responsibility."
Pyongyang, North Korea - UPF International Chair Hyung Jin Moon visited Pyongyang on September 7, a week before the memorial services for his father, Dr. Sun Myung Moon, to accept condolences from relatives residing in North Korea. The North also awarded Dr. Sun Myung Moon posthumously what it calls the National Reunification Prize in recognition of his contribution to inter-Korean reconciliation and unity, which was presented to his son.
Cheongpyeong, Korea - Korean government officials and Members of Congress were among the first visitors to pay their respects on September 6 to the Rev. Dr. Sun Myung Moon, who died September 3 and whose body lies in a memorial chapel at the Cheon Jeong Goong (Peace Palace) in the mountains east of Seoul.

Seoul, Korea - A forum on topics ranging from the role of faith-based alliances to regional cooperation in the Pacific Rim Era took place from March 22 to 25, 2012.
The International Leadership Conference in Korea brought together dignitaries and leaders from around the world to discuss interfaith cooperation, universal peace principles, and peace and security. In addition, participants supported the United Nations World Interfaith Harmony Week with an interfaith ceremony led by representatives of the major world religions.

There have also been various opportunities for visits over the years. The more exchanges we have with people from the North, the more we are able to understand each other and overcome the gaps caused by the decades of separation.
Yeosu, Korea - After the International Leadership Conference in Korea February 6-10, a number of international participants and staff spent a week in Yeosu learning about the history and potential of this key maritime region on the southern coast of Korea. The week culminated in a ceremony launching a boat built with an innovative negative-resin-mold technology.
