Portugal-2023-09-02-UPF-Portugal Delegation Attends Estoril Conferences

Cascais, Portugal—UPF was invited to attend the eighth edition of the Estoril Conferences, a renowned international event organized annually by NOVA School of Business & Economics and co-organized by NOVA Medical School, with the support of the Municipality of Cascais.

Jacques Marion, the UPF co-chair for Europe and the Middle East, and Gabriella Mieli, the UPF coordinator for Southern Europe, joined the UPF-Portugal delegation at the event, which took place at the NOVA School of Business & Economics on September 1 and 2, 2023.

For the second consecutive year, UPF was invited to this remarkable event as a partner. The conference's primary objective is to foster discussions on global challenges and promote innovative solutions. This year’s theme was "Re-Humanizing the World.”

The two-day conference was attended by over 1,000 participants, including many students and international guests.

With opening speeches by Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa and Education Minister João Costa, the conference featured a succession of panels on the planet, people, health, peace, and policy, addressing the rapid changes taking place in the world and the need to keep human beings at the center.

Speakers included a wide array of experts from around the world. Former presidents, Nobel laureates, scientists, artists and environmental activists offered their expertise.

The UPF-Portugal delegation of 12 included:

Professor Paulo Oliveira, the president of the Lusophone Observatory on Economic Activities, a professor and researcher at the Lisbon Lusophone University, and a UPF Ambassador for Peace;

Professor Nuno André,  a professor and researcher at Nova University of Lisbon, journalist, UPF Ambassador for Peace, and newly appointed collaborator in the Vatican Dicastery for Communication;

Dr. Natércia Mirão, the head of the Educational Projects Sector for Equality and Citizenship at the Odivelas Municipal Council;

Dr. Cristina Casas, the director of the Department of International Relations, Migration Policy, and Migrant Attraction at the High Commissioner for Migration;

Professor Dr. Helena Marujo, a professor at the Higher Institute of Social and Political Sciences of the University of Lisbon, holder of the UNESCO Chair of Peace, and a UPF Ambassador for Peace.

As a conference partner, UPF was offered a valuable opportunity for networking with speakers and participants. The event also provided a platform for UPF to engage with Ambassadors for Peace and partners. The quality of organization, high caliber of speakers, and warm hospitality extended to participants, along with the timely theme of the conference, created a memorable and informative event.

UPF-Portugal is looking forward to pursuing its partnership and cooperation with the Estoril Conferences. The newly proposed "Road to the Estoril Conferences" initiative provides an opportunity for contributing toward the upcoming 2024 edition. UPF aims to leverage its international expertise and human resources to support this high-level conference, fostering a fruitful collaboration in the years to come.
