ILC2021 Asia Pacific, July 28: Session III – Best Practices of NGOs and Non-State Actors

Asia Pacific—The third session of the July 28-29 International Leadership Conference 2021 (ILC2021) for UPF’s Asia Pacific region was convened on July 28, under the theme, “Toward Peaceful Reunification of the Korean Peninsula: Best Practices of Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) and Non-State Actors.” In total, 4,480 people registered for the session and 321 watched it live on Zoom and thousands more did so on YouTube and Facebook Live.
In his opening remarks, Dr. Tageldin Hamad, chairman of the World Association of Non-Governmental Organizations (WANGO), highlighted the value of the arts and sports, specifically, football, in supporting the peaceful reunification of the two Koreas. Sports bring people from different nations, religions and races together and thus promotes peace and friendship. He concluded by encouraging NGOs to organize football tournaments inside and outside North Korea and invite youth from North Korea, South Korea and other parts of the world to participate and create unity and harmony through football.
Gen. Dr. Shyam Prasad Nepal, a retired deputy inspector general of the Nepal Police and a Hindu community educator, suggested that civil society actors, including human rights organizations, the media and religious leaders, can be mediators in the reunification process.
Col. Jonathan Q. Baldevarona, chairman and president of the Maharlikan Movement for Cultural and Community Protection, Philippines, emphasized the importance of unity, and said: “Two hands are better than one, but extending more hands with hearts is the best way to pursue this quest.” He encouraged NGOs to create a collaborative framework for the effective delivery of assistance to the people of the Korean Peninsula that is aligned with government plans and programs when the two Koreas are in the process of reconciliation and reunification.
The two other speakers were Hon. Vijay Jolly, president of the Delhi Study Group, India, and Ms. Grace Shwe Zin Htaik, vice president, Intellectual Property Proprietors' Association, Myanmar.
The program closed with a Q&A session. Rev. Kamol Thananopavarn, secretary general of UPF-Thailand, served as the moderator.
