Sikkim State, India—The Sikkim chapter of UPF-India held its first “Peace Talks” webinar on July 1, 2020, on the theme, “Corona Pandemic and its Impact on Human Life: The Way Forward.”  Sikkim state, located in the northeast of India, borders Nepal to its west, China to its north and Bhutan to its east.  Around 500 people participated in the virtual event: 102 through Zoom and 400 through Facebook Live.

The webinar featured eight distinguished panelists. Special remarks were given by Dr. Chung Sik Yong, regional group chairman of UPF-Asia Pacific, and Hon. M.K. Sharma, Sikkim state’s minister of health. Hon. Sharma expressed his appreciation to UPF for organizing this webinar focused on overcoming the challenges of the pandemic and moving forward through it.

In her remarks, Hon. Rajkumari Thapa, a member of the Legislative Assembly of Sikkim, expressed her concerns about the short- and long-term impacts of the coronavirus.

Dr. M.P. Lama, a professor at Jawaharlal Nehru University and a chief economic advisor in the government of Sikkim, pointed out the many challenges the Himalayan region of India faces during the pandemic and suggested the government create and implement effective strategies to manage the COVID-19 crisis. He expressed particular concern about the economic impact of the pandemic on low income families and the overall food supply while lockdowns continue.

Other speakers included Hon. G.M. Gurung, former Sikkim state minister and chairman of UPF-Sikkim, and Mr. H.P. Dhakal, education secretary of UPF-Sikkim.

Mr. Krishna Adhikari, the secretary general of UPF-India, served as the moderator.
