"Working Mothers: The Pros and Cons for Children"
Thursday, February 23, 1:15 - 2:30 EST
Organized by the NGO Committee on the Family New York

What woman would not want to see more men take a more active part in sharing household duties? A multinational Harvard Business School study a few years ago determined that sons of working mothers are more likely to grow up to assume a greater role in caring for family members and participate more actively in household responsibilities. This is one of several positive points to emerge from the world of working mothers: About three-quarters of mothers with small children hold outside jobs.

However, studies indicate that many working mothers with young children would prefer to either stay at home or work part-time. For the many parents that have to work,  unless family members are available, finding quality and affordable care for their children is usually very difficult. The need for the best childcare is not an easy problem for parents or governments to solve.

Empirical evidence supports the understanding that the period from conception to age five is the most consequential of human development, forming the bedrock of lifelong well-being and achievement.  This event will explain some of the neuroscience of human development and make the case that paying more attention to early development – not early school – is the key to human flourishing, and families are the key to ensuring young children thrive. This event should be viewed by working parents as an opportunity to learn from experts in the field and make good choices for themselves and for their children.
