Peace Tour Inaugurates UPF in Jordan

Amman, Jordan - Ambassadors for Peace and volunteers in Jordan were deeply disappointed to learn that Dr. and Mrs. Sun Myung Moon would not come to Amman as part of their World Peace Tour. In a region where security is always a concern, suicide bombings at three Amman hotels on November 9, a few days before the scheduled gathering, caused them to change their plans.

A group of 120 Ambassadors for Peace and volunteers from the USA came to lend international support for the event. Led by Dr. Chang Shik Yang and Dr. Michael Jenkins, they participated in World Peace Tour events in Jerusalem and Amman.

Dr. Yang and Dr. Jenkins, along with regional Secretary General David Fraser Harris organized a peace walk to each of the three hotels to express condolences to the people of Jordan for those who died in the attacks. It was solemn, dignified, and warmhearted experiences. At each hotel, the group stopped for prayer and reflection, led at different times by imams, rabbis, and Christian ministers.

The main event was a beautiful banquet for about 700 people in a large ballroom at the Royal Hotel with outstanding speakers. The audience listened attentively to the reading of the peace message. Two key Jordanian Ambassadors for Peace who had invested themselves fully for the success of the event gave remarks: Gen. Mansour Mustafa Abu Rashid, Chairman of the Amman Center for Peace and Development, and Dr. Hamdi Mohammed Murad, a board member of the Jordanian Interfaith Co-Existence Research Center. Former US Ambassador to Bahrain Sam Zakhem, himself of Lebanese descent, spoke in perfect Arabic, followed by Rev. Dr. Walter Fauntroy, the noted American civil rights leader and former six-term congressman from Washington DC.
