Korean War Commemoration: Worldwide Photo Essay and Video Contest

International—Remember 727, established in 2008, and the Korean War Veterans Memorial Foundation is hosting the Korean War Commeoration: Worldwide Photo Essay and Video Contest (sponsored by Naeil Foundation)--to commemorate the anniversary of the Korean War (June 25, 1950-July 27, 1953), honor the sacrifices of the veterans and promote peace on the Peninsula.
The Contest also aims to raise awareness and funds for the Wall of Remembrance that will be added to the Korean War Memorial in Washington, DC. It took almost a decade to pass legislation and raise enough money allowing the construction of the Wall, that will etch the names of the 36,574 Americans killed in the Korean War, and 7,200+ Koreans who also died while serving in the Korean Augmentation to the U.S. Army (KATUSA). The Groundbreaking ceremony was held on May 21, 2021, with veterans, families of the fallen, and South Korean President Moon Jae-In in attendance. Yet, not too many know about this Wall.
In fact, people generally don’t know much about the Korean War, which is why it’s called the “Forgotten War.” Yet the Korean War involved 30 nations,* claimed the lives of more than 40,000 soldiers from the United Nations Allied countries (including 8,000+ POW/MIAs), and more than 2.5 million Koreans. It separated more than 10 million Korean families who have yet to meet their families in the North.
The 3-mile wide buffer zone between South and North Korea, known as the Korean Demilitarized Zone or the DMZ, is the most heavily armed border in the world. Today the two Koreas remain divided and are technically still at war.
Participants of the Korean War: Worldwide Photo Essay & Video Contest will join a worldwide effort to honor the veterans (many of whom are passing away) and hope for peace on the Korean Peninsula through their photos and videos.
Themes may include: Korean War Memorials, Veterans, POW/MIAs, Divided Families, One Korea, war & peace
Suggestions: Visit a nearby Korean War memorial/museum, interview a Korean War veteran, divided families members, or (grand)parents who experienced the war.
- Photo submission begin June 25, 2021
- Public and Judges voting period from July 18-July 25
- Winners will be announced via a virtual ceremony on July 27, 2021 (anniversary of the Korean War armistice)
Judges and presenters will include: former US Ambassador to Korea, South Korean Ambassador, Chairman of the Korean War Veterans Memorial Foundation, representatives of Veterans Organizations from the VFW, American Legion, and other distinguished VIPs, such as former Congressman Charlie Rangel + current Members of Congress, and Presidents of Korean Associations around the world
$10,000 in Prizes: $2000 for Grand Prize, $1000 for Runner-ups (in English and Korean) $500 for each of the following Categories for 18+ and $250 for 18 and younger:
