Montreal Interfaith Forum: Honoring the Legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr.

The fifth annual Interfaith Breakfast at Montreal City Hall honoring the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., took place at 8 a.m. on January 21, 2008. This event was organized by Rev. Darryl Gray and the Martin Luther King Legacy Committee and hosted by Mayor Gérald Tremblay, who offered a beautiful prayer to open the event, with the support of his brother, Councilman Marcel Tremblay.

Prayers were offered by a rabbi, a Catholic priest, a Muslim leader and imam, an evangelical pastor, a Unitarian pastor, a Hindu priest, and more. The Imani Family Full Gospel Church presented two songs. A UPF delegation from Toronto (Mitch Dixon, Stoyan Tadin and Paul Tamale) were present and recognized by the mayor.

The UPF was one of four recipients of the Martin Luther King Legacy award, given to individuals and organizations demonstrating the spirit of Dr. King. Franco Famularo accepted the plaque from Luc Harvey—a Conservative MP who himself has an interracial marriage—on behalf of UPF and gave a gracious acceptance speech.

Another award recipient was Father Emmett Johns, well-known locally for his many years of work with “Le bon Dieu dans la rue”, an organization he founded that aids homeless youth in Montreal. Afterwards, a group of about 10 participants including several Ambassadors for Peace continued on to Ottawa to attend the events at Ottawa City Hall and Parliament.

The news reports on CTV News were quite good, and UPF was mentioned in the Gazette article.
