By sharing innovative approaches to strengthening marriage, parenting and families, we can gain inspiration and practical ideas for projects and methods to impact our communities. Ambassadors for Peace around the world are working to strengthen the family by organizing family centers, operating educational projects, advocating for family-friendly policies. The following presentations were given at regional, international or UN conferences.
Ways Municipal Councils Can Promote Marriage
Nick Gulliford, FOCCUS Scoring Centre, UK
"Couples who have pre-marriage education are a third less likely to divorce. We want this type of support for couples to be routine in Britain."
Rationale for Marriage Preparation
Edward Hartley, Chairman, UPF-UK Marriage and Family Initiative
"We need a discussion and sharing of ideas about what can be done to better market and promote use of marriage education programs."
The Root of Peace Is the Family
Tan Sri Datin Paduka Zaleha Ismail, Chair, Chairman, National Population and Family Development Board, Malaysia
"The agenda of my government agency is development and improving the quality of life, which means basically a healthy society. This institution that I am heading can do a great deal to strengthen the base of families and promote peace building initiatives."
Reducing AIDS through Moral Education
Simon Mulongo, Presidential Resident District Commissioner, Uganda
"In 1984 Uganda had a population of 18 million people and 1.5 million of them were infected with HIV/AIDS. The rate was growing at between 26-31 percent per year. We managed to fight this scourge through moral education, and the infection has dropped to between 4 and 6 percent in various places in the country."
A Call to Preserve the Institution of the Family
Sharon Slater, President, Family Watch International
"Article 16 of the UN Declaration of Human Rights states that the family is 'the natural and fundamental group unit of society' which 'is entitled to protection by society and the State.' Article 29 outlines the rights of Member States to establish laws that meet 'just requirements of morality, public order and the general welfare in a democratic society.'”
Promoting Marriage and Family in Croatia
Darka and Marijo Živković, Family Center, Zagreb, Croatia
"We are promoting lifelong joyful, successful and beautiful marriages and families in Croatia. We believe this is achievable by everybody who desires it and uses proper methods to realize it."
