Quatre-Bornes, Mauritius - The Women's Federation for World Peace organized a Family Values Awareness and Cultural Show in the Municipal Reception Hall of Quatre-Bornes on August 18 for the children they sponsor, their parents or guardians, and the tutors and other volunteers who help the children.
Posters about family values and parenting were displayed at the entrance to the hall, and Deepah Beeharry was present to give advice about caring for and raising children.
After the opening song by Chris Mackey and Nancy Rosa, "Island in the Sun," Sheela Mathur reported about the academic support and additional activities that Women's Federation for World Peace offers the children they sponsor throughout the year.
One volunteer tutor thanked Mrs. Shakuntala Hawolder for taking her in as a sponsored child from 2002 to 2006 and said that what she learned from the programs has helped develop her personality and give her confidence.
Vidula Rahiman gave a presentation illustrated by video clips about parents as role models. Three vignettes demonstrated children imitating what their parents said and did: a young child copied the angry gestures and words of his father, an adolescent imitated the way his father sat cross-legged watching television, and a young girl followed her mother around town smoking when her mother smoked. "We must act responsibly and show love to our children in order to raise them as good citizens," she concluded.
Tusha Jhugeroo spoke about her determination and the sacrifices she has made to succeed. For three consecutive years, she has won first prize in the Sanskrit language in Mauritius. She was presented with a Parker pen in recognition of her accomplishments.
Sponsored children performed for the audience between the various presentations, singing songs and reciting poetry.
After the program, the parents and guardians lined up to receive their monthly support checks, and everyone enjoyed juice and cakes.
