Tokyo, Japan – On June 16, 2009, the UPF-Japan Board met in a hall in Tokyo. First, Rev. Eiji Tokuno, Co-chair of UPF-Japan, gave an address and presented the various international achievements of UPF. “Although we are facing national as well as international turmoil, let us promote our activities based on a clear vision,” said Rev. Tokuno.
The first session of the meeting was a round-table conference. The speaker, Amb. Nagao Hyodo, former Japanese Ambassador to Poland and Belgium, lectured on the theme “World Turbulence and the Japanese Strategy.” Referring to the U.S. Presidential election held last year, Amb. Hyodo said, “The fact that a black President was elected in the U.S. where racial discrimination is still strong is historical.” He then encouraged the participants to have accurate awareness toward Russia and China’s growth in national strength. In conclusion, Amb. Hyodo argued that Japan must develop active diplomatic strategies based on the consideration of such world situations.
The second session was the board meeting. In his remarks, the Chair of the Council of Ambassadors for Peace in Japan, Prof. Hiroo Suzuki (Emeritus Professor at Tsukuba University) said, “Since the Meiji period, Japan was able to develop due to the strong sense of unity among its people. But after the Second World War, Japan was faced with family breakdown, and the people lost this sense of unity. We must unite to convey the ideal of UPF to the Japanese people.”
Then, Mr. Masayoshi Kajikuri, Chairman of the Youth Federation for World Peace (YFWP) announced, “This year, we will be creating a substantial grass-roots foundation through Global Peace Action.”
This was followed by a presentation of “UPF’s activity reports and action plans for 2009” by Mr. Seiichi Kikuya, Secretary General of UPF-Japan. After the vision, mission, and goals of UPF (refer to box below) was proposed by Mr. Kikuya, the board members considered the action plans. “We should be more active in promoting activities that take root in local communities. Revitalization of local communities will lead to national development.” “How about focusing on youth training programs so that they can forge the future of this nation?” “We must come up with a more concrete plan to meet these goals.” The board members actively exchanged their views. The meeting concluded with the adoption of the action plans by all board members.
