Jakarta, Indonesia - We had the honor of a visit by Prof. Rajmohan Gandhi, grandson of Mahatma Gandhi, and his wife, Usha Gandhi, to Indonesia, March 9-12, 2010.
On the third day of his visit to Indonesia, Prof. Rajmohan Gandhi enlighened the Indonesian audience through his profound public lecture delivered at Muhammadiyah HAMKA University on peace and human security in promoting world harmony.
The public lecture was attended by professors, lecturers, Muslim leaders, student leaders, and students from different faculties. H.E. Muktesh K. Pardeshi, the Minister/ Deputy Ambassador of India to Indonesia, gave an introductory lecture on the legacy of Mahatma Gandhi and peace. Dr. Muhammad Najib, a Member of Parliament of Inonesia, also made a statement on peace and morality in politics. Mr. Parsdeshi presented a book on Mohandas Gandhi to the university.
The participants shared some of their experiences and raised some questions on the problem of conflicts, war, and insecurity in different parts of the world, human rights abuses, social injustices, and family problems. Specific questions were raised on the art of listening and outreach as well as the peace process in the Middle East.
On March 12, Prof. Rajmohan and Ushaji were received at Pesantren Darun Najah, the Islamic Learning Community, and the Gandhi Memorial International School in Jakarta.
