Georgetown, Guyana - The Hon. Prime Minister (and acting President), Mr. Samuel Hinds, accepted the UPF Peace Medal from Ronald McGarrell at a Peace Forum in Georgetown on September 25. The event was sponsored by the Association of Justices of the Peace and Commissioners of Oaths.
The program is held annually to recognize the UN International Week of Peace. Ronald McGarrell was chosen to be the Chairman of the program and was also one of five persons who were awarded "Peace Builders" Medals by the Association of Justices of the Peace and Commissioners of Oaths. Other awardees were Prime Minister Hinds; Justice Donald Trotman, former Justice of the High Court and Chairman of the UN Association of Guyana; Sister Vasantha, Head of the Brahma Kumaris Spiritual University of Guyana; and Mr. Eric Phillips, Executive Member of the African Cultural & Development Association.
For the occasion, Pandit Chrishna Persaud, President of the Justices of the Peace and Commissioners of Oaths Association of Guyana, wore the Peace Medal presented to him by UPF Founder Rev. Dr. Sun Myung Moon during his visit to Guyana in 2005.
An audience of almost 300 persons consisting of Justices of the Peace and Ambassadors for Peace and their families were treated to exhilarating array of Indian and African dances and drumming and peace messages by the awardees. A local singer gave a heart-felt rendition of Mohammed Raffeek's famous song "The World Is One," followed by the keynote address delivered by Prime Minister Hinds.
