Ambassadors for Peace

Congratulations to New Marshall Islands President

The president of the Japan-Marshall Islands Parliamentarians Association, Hon. Kazunori Tanaka, a Diet member from the Liberal Democratic Party, handed Mr. Kenichi Ito, Secretary General of UPF-Marshall Islands, letters of congratulations to the new national leaders to deliver on his behalf.

After last year’s national elections, the Marshall Islands Senate elected new leaders at its first meeting in January 2012. Christopher Loeak was elected President and Likiep Senator Donald F. Capelle was elected speaker.

Both are well known to the network of Ambassadors for Peace in the Marshall Islands. The president’s elder brother, Hon. Kotak Loeak, is an Ambassador for Peace and is Chairman of the Council of Iroji, the upper house of the legislature, which consists of 12 traditional chiefs. Another Ambassador for Peace, Hon. Alfred Capelle, is a relative of Speaker Donald Capelle.

President Loeak began his political career following his election to the Senate from Ailinglaplap in 1985. He has served in different capacities, including Minister of Justice, Minister of Social Services, Minister of Education, and Minister in Assistance to the President under former President Litokwa Tomeing. He studied at the Hawaii Pacific College and Gonzaga University School of Law.

Along with the letters of congratulations, both President Loeak and Speaker Capelle were appointed Ambassadors for Peace and given copies of the autobiography of UPF Founder Rev. Sun Myung Moon.

A five-hour airplane flight east Tokyo, Marshall Islands is seeking to build closer ties with Japan through tourism and technological investment. A Japan-Marshall Islands Parliamentarians Association was founded in 2003 following up on a visit by then-president Kessai Note to Japan.
