On January 17, UPF-Cote d’Ivoire held a welcoming ceremony for the Ambassadors for Peace who received their appointments on December 27, 2007. The venue was the prestigious District Hall in Abidjan.
The program was organized in order to establish deeper relationships of heart with the newly appointed Ambassadors for Peace.
Thirty guests were expected. People arrived early, and the hall was packed with 38 new Ambassadors for Peace and eight previously appointed Ambassadors for Peace.
The program introduced UPF and its core principles. After the welcoming address given by Hon. Emmanuel Gbocho, President of the UPF board, Mr. Eugene Ahondjo, Assistant UPF Secretary General, presented the Five Principles of Ambassadors for Peace. Then Mr. Adama Doumbia, UPF regional director for West Africa, explained the significance of the Ambassador for Peace certificate not only as an honor but mainly as a commission to become peacemaker. He described UPF’s activities and its future projects, including the establishment of local Peace Councils and holding Ambassadors for Peace seminars.
The meeting was also an opportunity to hear from Ambassadors for Peace. Speakers included the Director of the National Police Academy, a lady commissioner, a mayor and former Ambassador, a Member of Parliament, an insurer, and a university professor. They spoke about the Five Principles of Peace and their resolution to study them more deeply and become peace activists. More people wanted to speak, but there was not enough time to hear from everybody.
Twelve new Ambassadors for Peace received their certificate and expressed pride in receiving this appointment.
On January 22, 2008 channel 1 of the national TV station presented a good report on the ceremony.
[Note: A unity government established in March 2007 ended several years of fighting between government and rebel forces.]
