Buenos Aires, Argentina—An Ambassadors Meeting, a new type of event UPF-Argentina launched this year where Ambassadors for Peace can introduce initiatives, present panel discussions and speak on a topic related to their field of expertise, was held on June 23, 2016 at the Embassy for Peace in Buenos Aires. Martha Edit Candioti, who is a writer and an Ambassador for Peace, spoke on Argentina’s “Independence: An Idea Sustained Since 1580.” On July 9, 2016 Argentina celebrated its 200th independence day.

In her speech, Ms. Candioti alluded to the first sons of Argentina who died for the country’s independence from Spain, and other events that took place prior to the May Revolution in 1810. She spoke of the heroes of Argentina’s independence and the values they exemplified. She read a statement, written by one of the founding fathers of Argentina, José de San Martín and talked about Manuel Belgrano and his friendship with the first governor of Santa Fe province, Francisco Candioti, who is one of Ms. Candioti’s ancestors. She also spoke about Francisco Laprida, representative of San Juan province to the Tucumán Congress, which declared Argentina’s independence on July 9, 1816. At the end of the meeting, Mrs. Candioti gave all the participants a copy of her book, “Poesía y cuentos del… tiempo” as a gift.
