Lima, Peru—UPF-Peru continued its work of expanding its contacts in Peruvian society by participating in various NGO activities in Peru’s capital in November.
1. Film Event Organized by the NGO Anglo Peruana at the Museum of Art of Lima
UPF-Peru coordinator general, Mr. Jaime Fernandez, represented the chapter at a film event organized by the NGO Anglo Peruana, which helps to educate and teach values to children.
The program included a series of short films about nine children who live in Anglo-Peruana’s Hostel Amantaní in Cuzco, a city in the Peruvian Andes. The films, whose title is “How to Have Fun Without Technology," were engaging, and the auditorium at the Museum of Art of Lima (Museo de Arte de Lima), where the event took place, was filled with 250 people.
Mr. Fernandez spoke about UPF to the co-directors of the hostel, Mr. Fred Branson and Mr. Chris Palfreyman, who thanked UPF for being present at and supporting the event.
2. Ambassador for Peace Dr. Yrigoyen Awarded Medal at the Casa Ricardo Palma Foundation
Mr. Fernandez together with Women’s Federation for World Peace (WFWP)-Peru president, Mrs. Faith Jones and UPF-Trujillo president, Mr. Wilson Chavez, and his wife, Mrs. Pilar, attended the event. Ambassadors for Peace Mrs. Olga Torres, who is a member of UPF-Peru’s Interfaith Committee, and Mr. Carlos Espinoza also joined the award ceremony, which took place at the Casa Ricardo Palma Foundation.
At the table of honor were the Ambassador of India to Peru and renowned Peruvian anthropologist, Dr. Federico Kaufman Doig. Ambassador for Peace and diplomat, Dr. Carlos Alberto Yrigoyen, was awarded a medal in recognition of his work translating 33 literary works by Peruvian writer Ricardo Palma into Bengali.
In his final remarks, Dr. Yrigoyen thanked UPF and the Ambassadors for Peace, and recognized UPF-Peru president, Dr. Trevor Edward Jones, for his efforts for peace.
In addition, Dr. Alvarez Vita and Dr. Yrigoyen confirmed their participation as speakers for UPF’s commemoration of Human Rights Day 2016, which will take place in December in the Sala Grau of the Peruvian Congress.
3. Lions Club’s 2016 Peace Poster Contest
Mr. Fernandez was invited by the Lions Club of Miraflores in Lima to represent UPF as a member of a panel of judges—three of whom were art teachers—who would choose the local winner of the Lions Club’s International Peace Poster Contest. For more than 25 years, millions of children around the world have participated in the contest, whose theme for this year is “A Celebration of Peace.”
Four drawings made by children between 10 and 12 years old were selected as finalists. The winning drawing was chosen and sent to the United States to compete at the international level. Each member of the panel received a certificate recognizing their participation.
