Australia-2017-07-03-Australian Ambassadors for Peace Address Drug Abuse

Sydney, Australia—The bimonthly Ambassadors for Peace meeting had as its theme the UN International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.

Some 40 Ambassadors for Peace, UPF supporters and guests from a wide range of cultural and religious backgrounds attended this informative and thought-provoking meeting, which was held on July 3, 2017, at the Oceania Peace Embassy.

The master of ceremonies was Youth Ambassador for Peace Daniel Meadows. The Acknowledgment to People and Country was given by Aboriginal elder Pearl Wymarra. Prior to the speakers there was a screening of a UPF introductory video.

Gregory Stone, the president of UPF-Australia, gave a presentation on “Drug Abuse: Focus on Prevention.”

The guest speaker was Tony Wood from Drug Free Australia, who spoke movingly from his firsthand experience after his daughter, Anita, died at 15 due to taking an ecstasy tablet at a Sydney dance party. Both Mr. Stone and Mr. Wood gave convincing reasons to oppose the legalization of illicit drugs.

The International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking was established by the United Nations in 1988. It is observed around the world every year on June 26.

The evening concluded with a rendition of the song “What a Wonderful World” and announcements. It was, as usual, an enjoyable event that included the sharing of food and good company.
