Callao, Peru—A fire broke out before dawn Thursday in a shantytown in the port of Callao, spreading over a city block and destroying more than 200 homes were destroyed after a fire broke out at dawn on July 25, 2019. Few of the one or two-story buildings survived the fire; most were made of plywood, plastic and similarly flammable materials. The fire spread quickly and made worse by explosions from a workshop where fireworks were being made and stored.
On the same day the presidential committee of UPF-Peru reviewed the situation and decided to ask our Ambassadors for Peace for support and donations. There was an immediate positive response. Three days later Ambassadors for Peace, including a doctor and his team of medical volunteers, visited Callao, taking food, clothing, and donations for the families left homeless by the fire. They worked in cooperation with other NGOs and were warmly applauded for their efforts by the municipal representatives.
