Dakar, Senegal - The official launch of the Senegal chapter of the Universal Peace Federation took place in the main Unesco Hall in Dakar on May 28, 2008.
Cheikh Diery CISSE, special assistant to Imam Cheikh Assane Cisse, presided at the ceremony. Cheikh CISSE, a member of the UPF Presiding Council, was unable to attend because of a religious ceremony in Kaolack, his hometown.
The seminar was opened with a prayer led by Cheikh CISSE, who invited all participants to pray in their own religious way of praying. Then a video of a recent international meeting of the Universal Peace Federation in New York was shown.
Speaking on behalf of Imam CISSE, Cheikh Cisse exhorted all the Ambassadors for Peace to be more committed to their daily mission. He also emphasized the work of the UPF founder, the Rev Dr. Sun Myung MOON, in promoting lasting peace for the world
Mbaye DIOP, Secretary General of UPF-Senegal, gave a PowerPoint report about UPF activities in Senegal and nearby countries, in Africa as a whole, the Middle East, and many parts of the world. Sixty Ambassadors for Peace were present, along with 31 guests.
New members of the UPF national board were introduced. Pr. NDONGO will continue to serve as Chairman, assisted by Dethie DIOUF as Vice Chairman, Mbaye DIOP as Secretary General, and Colonel Bara FALL as Treasurer.
Nine committees were established:
1) Partnership and Sponsorship Committee - Dethie DIOUF and Landing NIASSY
2) Committee of Culture - Deputy Adama Daouda DIOP
3) Committee of Ethics, Morals and Health - Dr. DA VEIGA and Robert DIARRA
4) Committee for Economic Development - Seynabou GAYE SARR
5 ) Youth and Sport Committee - NDA Lattay Donalson
6) Organizing Committee - Aimee CORREA, André SAGNA, and Maria Therese DIAGNE
7) Media and Information Committee - Lamine DEMBA and Bala Moussa DIEDHIOU
8) Social and Inter-religious Committee - Mbaye GUEYE Anna, Valdiodio NDIAYE and Theodore BINDIA
9) Education and Training Committee - Abdoulaye SENE and Colonel Bara FALL.
Sheets were dispatched to all Ambassadors for Peace inviting them to register in committees where they could be of greatest service.
Then as Vice Chairman and spokesman of the Preparatory Committee, Dethie DIOUF reported about the hard work done by the Preparations Committee for four months that led to this successful assembly. He also stated that in the future, Ambassadors for Peace will be appointed based on their willingness to develop the organization.
Pr. NDONGO expressed his grateful heart toward the Preparatory Committee and exhorted all the Ambassadors for Peace to help raise the resources to develop the work. He promised to support the Partnership and Sponsorship Committee and, in his work as chairman of Civil Society Relations for UPF-West Africa, to find ways to promote UPF as a consultant to governments seeking to prevent and resolve conflicts.
In conclusion, he urged the board to avoid becoming an association of Ambassadors for Peace only but to be open to all people of good will who are willing to work together for a common cause. "Do not forget that UPF is global network," he said.
The wireless microphone was passed from one person to another, and many Ambassadors for Peace expressed a renewed commitment.
One thing became clear: the UPF-Senegal national chapter experienced a dynamic launch.
