UPF-Russia Participates in a Round Table at the Parliament Newspaper Press Center

Moscow, Russia - UPF-Russia was officially invited to participate in a June 26 round table on the topic of economic migration to Russia at the Press Center of the Parliament newspaper.

Participants inf the round table were the First Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee on Nationalities Valery Rashkin, Member of the State Duma Committee on Budget and Taxes Dmitry Ushakov, Chairman of the All-Russian Public Movement "Tajik Labor Migrants" Karamat Sharipov, and the Secretary General of UPF-Russia Maria Nazarova.

The discussion focused on measures to combat illegal immigration, in particular a bill aimed at increasing insurance premiums for employers to recruit workers from other countries. The discussion touched upon the introduction of a visa system for "economic migrants" and measures to protect the jobs of Russian citizens, as well as the economic and sociocultural aspects of the use of migrant labor for national development.

Maria Nazarova stressed the need for a civilized form of protecting the rights of foreign workers based upon universal values in dealing with this complicated issue. At the same time she mentioned importance to address the issue of illegal migration. The issue of migration is quite serious in many countries that are economic leaders in their regions, such as the U.S., Japan, and members of the European Union. Hopefully Russia will be able to avoid mistakes and take advantage of the successful experience of other countries in this regard. She also linked the importance for Russia to resolve migration issues with the countries of the former Soviet Union and visa-free travel with the European Union for citizens of the Russian Federation.

A video of the round table was posted to the official website of the Parliament newspaper and an article on the topic was published in the printed version of the newspaper.
