Buenos Aires, Argentina—UPF-Argentina held a meeting on the Sunhak Peace Prize at Bioy Casares Hall in Buenos Aires on May 12, 2016. The international award, which was established by UPF Co-Founder Dr. Hak Ja Han Moon, honors individuals and organizations that have made significant contributions to peace and human development. The Prize’s motto is “Making the World Better for Future Generations.”
A documentary that was produced by the South Korean TV network MBCNET called, “A New Message of Peace,” was shown. The 35-minute feature highlights the vision of the Sunhak Peace Prize and the Prize’s first award winners: Kiribati President H.E. Anote Tong and Indian fisheries scientist, Dr. Modadugu Vijay Gupta. President Tong was honored with the Prize for raising global awareness about the effects of climate change and Dr. Gupta, for developing low-cost methods of aquaculture, which has emerged as a possible solution to address future food crises.
Afterwards, Dr. David Frol, a lawyer who has promoted dialogue and religious freedom in Argentina, spoke about his experience attending the Prize’s first award ceremony, which took place on August 28, 2015 during UPF’s World Summit in Seoul. Then, Mr. Miguel Werner, UPF-Argentina’s secretary general, talked about the criteria candidates are required to meet to be considered for the award, as well as the nomination and selection process for it. The next Sunhak Peace Prize will be awarded in February 2017 in Seoul. The prize consists of a medal, a plaque, and one million dollars.
