Suva, Fiji—The government of Fiji has approved the teaching of a UPF-backed character education curriculum in all nine of the country’s educational districts.
On June 5, 2015, UPF sister organization Family Federation for World Peace and Unification (FFWPU) organized a one-day seminar on the UPF character education curriculum in one of the districts. UPF-Oceania Regional Secretary General Greg Stone came to Fiji to give the lectures to 46 teachers from 10 high schools.
The response of the teachers was very positive, and FFWPU-Fiji Chair Santosh Neupane sent a report on the seminar to the Fiji Ministry of Education, Heritage and Arts. The secretary of the ministry replied, asking FFWPU to submit a proposal for teaching the curriculum to teachers in all nine educational districts.
In an official letter that was received on July 6, 2015, the ministry approved the proposal for teaching the character education curriculum to teachers at 45 designated venues in all nine districts by the end of 2018, thereby opening the way for the curriculum to be taught to schoolchildren throughout the country.
The UPF character education curriculum is a non-sectarian series of lessons that teach children and teenagers how to be happy and fulfilled by developing principled relationships with family, friends and the larger community. The curriculum contents are based on the teachings of UPF Founder Dr. Sun Myung Moon, which also form the basis for the UPF Principles of Peace.
