Peace Education

Forum at the Georgetown Club

The Universal Peace Federation (Guyana Chapter) hosted a Public Forum attended by 140 persons including the Mayor, The Hon. Hamilton Green; Deputy Mayor Mr. Robert Williams; Haji Roshan Khan, leader of the Guyana Islamic Forum; Pandit Chrishna Persaud, an Executive of the Guyana Maha Sabha; and other leading citizens.

The programme was held at the prestigious Georgetown Club. The welcome and opening remarks were made by Pastor Ronald McGarrell. An Universal Peace Federation video was shown, after which Hon. Mayor Hamilton Green was introduced. His honor spoke about The Washington Times' 25th Anniversary celebrations that he had just attended, as well as the UPF seminar centered on the theme "American Leadership at a Time of Global Crisis."

After his presentation, the mayor took questions and comments from the floor. Many participants said they were enlightened by this gathering and indicated a desire for many more programs to further generate enthusiastic public debate and discussions. Others in the audience included Dr. Eton Simon, President of the American University for Peace Studies; Mr. Rasleigh Jackson, former Foreign Affairs Minister; Rev. Gordon Hamlet, Vice Chairman of the Guyana Council of Churches; Bishop Juan Edghill Chairman of the Ethnic Relation Commission; Professor Harold Lutchman, formerly of the University of Guyana; Mrs. Sheila Chapman-Won, the WFWP Chairwoman; and several prominent business leaders.

Haji Roshan Khan read quotations taken from speeches made by members of the International Board of the Universal Peace Federation. Dr. Eton Simon, President of the American University for Peace Studies, then spoke about the importance of peace initiatives at this historic time. Ronald McGarrell brought the guests up to date about the Bering Strait project and other initiatives being undertaken by the Universal Peace Federation under the vision and leadership of Rev. Dr. Sun Myung Moon and Dr. Hak Ja Han Moon.

Two persons were honored with Ambassador for Peace certificates, bringing the local figure to 442. Five media outlets were present to cover the event, including four TV stations and the national print media.
