UPF-Mongolia Expands Educational Programs

Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia - Mongolian Ambassadors for Peace have participated in eight international leadership training programs since January 2009 on Cheju Island in Korea and Bangkok, Thailand. The programs offered a variety of educational components to the 170 participants, helping them develop leadership capabilities and challenging them to dedicate themselves for the good of their nation.
Conferences this year were held February 20-26 (in Thailand), June 20-27 (in Korea), and September 20-27 (in Thailand). The programs were a partnership among the Education Department of Ulaanbaatar, the Education Departments of each administrative district, UBS Television, UPF-Thailand, and UPF-Korea. These international events offered opportunities for Ambassadors for Peace from various fields of endeavor to meet their counterparts from other nations and expand their global perspective. The natural beauty of the settings enhanced the educational experience. A highlight of the trip to Cheju Island was the opportunity for people from the land-locked nation of Mongolia to ride an ocean-going boat.
Witnessing the impact of the international leadership workshops, Mongolian educators approached UPF and asked them to help arrange a visit to leading Korean universities to seek support for their efforts to build a new unified university campus in Mongolia. As a result 27 people from the Mongolian University of Science and Technology, including the Vice President, traveled to Korea on November 11 for a one-week visit to Seoul National University and Seoul Digital University.
Earlier in the year, UPF-Mongolia supported the Oyunii Erel Student Association in organizing a conference at the Sunjin Grand Hotel in Ulaanbaatar. The May 8 conference aimed to build the capacity of the young generation to become leaders. The main presentations were on “How to change myself, build a strong family, and lead society,” “Individual development and the concept of value,” and “A comparison of Mongolia’s future with the development of Korea, Japan, and China.” Among the 115 attendees were students at the baccalaureate and master’s levels, professors, and university presidents. The President of Mongolia, Tsakhiagiin Elbegdorj, sent a delegation to the conference, and his representative read a message on his behalf. The guest lecturer was Mr. Lee Ki Dong, Head of the International Department of Sung Kyung Kwon University in Seoul. News of the event was broadcast on national television.
One outreach activity has been donating books to an orphanage. Mongolian people value books highly, especially books about history, traditional wisdom, and fairy tales. In fairy tales, nothing ends in a tragedy, and the tales give children hope and a clear vision for their lives, such as helping others and treating others fairly. Mr. Sumber, Director of Mongolian National Pharmacy Museum and an Ambassador for Peace, initiated the idea of supporting the Center for Children’s Education and Care last year. Donors typically give clothes, food, and other material support. These are helpful, but don’t nourish the mind, and Ambassadors for Peace wanted to give something that would help develop the children's minds and spirits. This is the second year that UPF-Mongolia has donated books of fairy tales to the children.
To publicize its peace work, UPF-Mongolia began publication of a monthly free newspaper, Peace Messenger. It also features the work of people and NGOs who share the same vision for prosperity and peace of Mongolia. Several issues have been published this year and distributed through Ambassador for Peace networks.
