One month after the September International Leadership Conference that was part of UPF's Assembly 2007, UPF-Nigeria held a welcome home reception and dinner on October 25 for the Nigerian delegation sent by H.E. Alhaji Umaru Musa Yar'Adua, President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. The delegation was led in New York by the Attorney General. This high-level gathering provided a forum for the Attorney General to report about the international conference to Nigerians. "When I addressed the Assembly 2007," he said, "I emphasized that Africa and the whole world will launch into an era of sustained peace if we commit ourselves to strict adherence to the rule of law. The rule of law guarantees peace and order, safety, and security. The rule of law guarantees a process and a procedure which completely eliminates tension. The rule of law guarantees due process and assures every other citizen of remedy when rights are trampled upon." The Nigerian delegation to UPF's Assembly 2007 included the former President Chief Ernest Shonekan, the Secretary General and National Coordinator, Olaleye Alao, and other dignitaries. "Peace is such a precious gem that must be sought for by all peoples the world over," the Attorney General continued. "There is, therefore, no sacrifice too great for the sake of realizing a unified peaceful world, country, or community. In fact, peace comes with freedom, but there is no freedom without responsibility." In addition to providing an opportunity to report on Assembly 2007, the gathering at the Transcorp Hilton highlighted the interest of government officials in UPF peace efforts in Nigeria. Existing Ambassadors for Peace attended with their guests, among whom were former first ladies. |
