Peace Education

Workshop on 'Russia, Protect Your Children'

Novosibirsk, Russia - A workshop on “Russia, Protect Your Children!” initiated by the Women’s Initiative Creative Association, the Universal Peace Federation, and the Center of Family Education, took place on May 31, the eve of International Children's Day.

Thirty experts from state and grassroots organizations dealing with children who have been sexually abused, discussed the project of the Code of Ethics with experts and shared methodology accumulated in seven regions of Russia within the past ten years. The work of focus-group experts in these regions can serve as experiences that can be expanded and communicated to the State Duma deputies as well. Experts should be known by names and their proposals considered when laws are drafted.

The focus group drew an interesting conclusion: for the children not to become victims of sexual violence, we must try and educate social activists at schools, colleges, and universities; people should understand their responsibilities in respect to their tribe, nation, and motherland.

When we closed children’s organizations in the primary and high school, children's voice was absent from the public life of their schools. As a consequence, children do not acquire the social consciousness to protect their childhood. An individualistic understanding of personality has led to a “market” approach to people in which even children could become articles of trade: organ donors, objects of commercial sexual exploitation, and targets of sexual violence.

With the commercialization of society and rejection of morals, Russians are now confronted by the necessity to invent some kind of mechanisms to overcome the problem.
