UPF-Luxembourg organized a forum on "The Realization of Peace" on October 22. The conference MC was Mr. Paul Frank, Secretary General of UPF-Luxembourg, who also gave the welcoming and concluding remarks.
The morning session included an explanation of their activities by various Ambassadors for Peace. This was followed by an overview of the international activities of UPF by Dr. Frank Kaufmann, special advisor of UPF-Luxembourg. In the afternoon, Mr. Roger Nouazi, a psychologist, gave a presentation on the theme of "Psychology and Peace," in which he drew on the structure of Freud's psychoanalysis, and the pyramid of Abraham Maslow's hierarchy of needs which includes five levels of human needs to be fulfilled in order for peace to be established.
The final presentation was given by Dr. Kaufmann, who explained that the three main areas of interest of UPF are interfaith, peace education, and service. However, he pointed out that UPF’s work in these areas differs fundamentally from that of other NGOs, being based on principles rooted in the traditions of all religions and especially the insights and analysis of its founder Rev. Sun Myung Moon. For example, to bring the different faiths together, it is necessary to take into account the actions that are documented in the different traditions which brought about divisions within humanity. In the Abrahamic religions, the stories of Cain and Abel and of Jacob and Esau, provide the key. Dr. Kaufmann also explained that many NGOs operate at only the first and/or second levels of Maslow’s pyramid (physiological and safety), whereas all human needs (including love/belong, esteem and self-actualization) have to be taken into account.
