Overflow Audience at Principles of Peace Seminar in Southern Nepal

Biratnagar, Nepal - “The response was unexpected; it was overwhelming,” reported Mr. Prakash Babu Thapa, the President of Nepal’s chapter of the student organization, World–Collegiate Association for the Research of Principles. He was giving details about a second five-day Principles of Peace seminar conducted August 15-19 in southern Nepal where organizers had planned for 220 participants at the Opening Session – but instead 350 guests showed up.

“The size of the auditorium was way too small. There were not enough chairs and no room to even stand inside the hall. Guests crowded near the windows standing outside to try to listen to the presentations,” Mr. Thapa explained. In a single day organizers had to cancel the contract for the first hall and find a bigger facility.

In addition, Mr. Tirtha Raj Ghimire, Peace Council Coordinator for Morang District in southern Nepal, received more than 50 phone calls asking to be invited to the program. Other programs will be held to accommodate the growing interest.

This program was held in Biratnagar, the industrial capital of Nepal and a southern city near the Indian border. Earlier in August, a similar program was organized in Kathmandu, Nepal’s capital with 252 participants. Three other programs have been planned for various regions of this Himalayan nation.

The presentations focused on UPF’s Universal Principles of Peace. They highlighted the role of human responsibility and self-governance as key factors in nation-building. The theme for the program was “Raising Public-Minded Leaders for Building a Nation of Peace.” A total of 292 people graduated from the seminar.
