Lima, Peru—UPF-Peru celebrated Earth Day 2016 with representatives of different sectors offering perspectives on the importance of this international day in support for environmental protection.
UPF and the Peruvian branch of the Gran Fraternidad Universal (Great Universal Brotherhood) co-sponsored the program, which took place at UPF’s headquarters in the country, on April 22, and was attended by diplomats and political and civic leaders, as well as representatives of environmental NGOs.
The meeting was inaugurated by Gen. Hector Jhon Caro, vice president of UPF-Peru and a former anti-terrorism specialist who successfully led a special section of the Peruvian police in the police’s fight against the Shining Path terrorist organization in the late 1980s.
The speakers, among them, Peruvian diplomat Ambassador Juan Alvarez Vita, shared their thoughts on the protection of the environment as well as gave examples of the work they had done in this area.
The evening was enlivened by two musical presentations: one was a special song to “Mother Earth,” offered by a couple, and the other was a singing of “Inca Son,” led by the internationally recognized Peruvian musician César Villalobos, who performed it with his wife and their son.
New Ambassadors for Peace were appointed, including four musicians who have performed at various UPF-Peru events and who will be developing musical programs with the chapter to reach out to more areas of society.
The evening concluded with the audience of around 70 people sharing refreshments together with the speakers and artists, while discussing the issues of this day.
