Abuja, Nigeria—The Federal Government of Nigeria has invited UPF to develop programs to help its amnesty program for former Niger Delta militants.
The invitation was extended during a courtesy visit by UPF-Nigeria leaders to Brigadier Gen. Paul T. Boroh (retired), special adviser to President Muhammadu Buhari on the Niger Delta and the coordinator of the Presidential Amnesty Program, in his office in Abuja.
The visit provided an opportunity for UPF-Nigeria Secretary General Dr. Raphael Ogar Oko to brief Gen. Boroh on UPF’s programs and activities—and, in particular, its approaches to peacebuilding, conflict resolution and reconciliation.
During the visit, Gen. Boroh was presented with the certificate as an Ambassador for Peace as he formally joined UPF-Nigeria. Speaking at the event, Gen. Boroh said he was joining the UPF Ambassadors for Peace network with the hope that he may facilitate the relationship between UPF Ambassadors for Peace and the Federal Government of Nigeria under the leadership of President Buhari.
Gen. Boroh invited UPF-Nigeria to support peacebuilding efforts in the Niger Delta. He urged UPF to utilize its global network of Ambassadors for Peace and the Universal Peace Principles to support the empowerment of former Niger Delta militants to become peacebuilders in the Niger Delta.
The Office of the Special Adviser to the President on Niger Delta expects UPF to mobilize its members and network to support the Presidential Amnesty Program to transform militants into peaceful citizens.
In the days ahead UPF-Nigeria will work to develop special technical assistance programs to support the Presidential Amnesty Program in dealing with conflict resolution and reconciliation in the Niger Delta.
