Caltanissetta, Italy—Pupils at a school in Sicily competed to create the best artwork on the theme of “Culture of Peace.”
As part of the project "Culture of Peace: Respect and Peaceful Coexistence between Different Cultures,” children in the fourth and fifth years at the Leonardo Sciascia School submitted their artwork, which then was judged by a committee.
The “Culture of Peace” project was organized jointly by the intercultural association Toward the High and the local chapter of UPF. The teachers and pupils at the school were involved and enthusiastic about the theme of the project.
An exhibition of the children’s artwork was shown in the Magna Hall of the school starting on June 5, 2017.
On June 6, an awards ceremony was held to recognize the winning entries. The ceremony was held in the presence of the school director, Giusy Mazzarino; the town’s cultural advisor, Carlo Campione; the area’s project manager, Mariella La Monica; the head of the examination committee, Dora La Placa; and Michele Cavallotto of the local chapter of UPF.
At the end of the ceremony, Michele Cavallotto of UPF spoke about the importance of mutual respect between different cultures and religions and explained how each of us can contribute to world peace by becoming a little peace ambassador.
