Nigerian Students of Peace and Conflict Resolution

Abuja, Nigeria—Young Nigerians who are studying peace and conflict resolution have visited the UPF office to discuss cooperation in peace education.
Students from the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) studying peace and conflict resolution at the degree level met the secretary general of UPF-Nigeria, Dr. Raphael Ogar Oko, to learn about UPF’s Peace Principles and its activities for national peace.
The meeting began after some of the students listened to a program on Armed Forces radio in Abuja in which Dr. Oko discussed UPF and the way to achieve national peace. Soon afterward, the coordinator of the Peace and Conflict Resolution students forum requested an audience to introduce their program and to learn about the Universal Peace Federation.
At an initial meeting, seven members of the forum’s national executive board met with UPF staff at the Ambassadors for Peace education center in the Wuse 2 district of Abuja.
The discussion focused on the UPF founders, the vision and mission of UPF, as well as ongoing programs and activities of the organization. The students were inspired by the vision of UPF and the five Peace Principles. They proposed to be affiliated with UPF and expressed their wish to attend UPF programs, especially the peace education course being offered at the Peace Education Center in Abuja. The executive officers of the forum resolved to invite other students to attend an introductory seminar on UPF to be held on October 14, 2017, at the Peace Embassy in Abuja.
The meeting at the Peace Embassy had over 40 students who are currently enrolled in the peace and conflict resolution course at the National Open University of Nigeria. The meeting commenced by 11:30 a.m. with opening prayers and the national anthem of Nigeria.
Dr. Oko was invited to address the students about UPF, and this provided a unique opportunity to testify about the UPF founders’ amazing work to bring about world peace as well as activities of UPF in Nigeria.
The students were introduced to organizations affiliated with UPF, such as the Family Federation for World Peace and Unification (FFWPU), the Women’s Federation for World Peace (WFWP), Youth and Students for Peace (YSP), International Association of Parliamentarians for Peace (IAPP), and the Professors World Peace Academy (PWPA), all of which are active in Nigeria.
The presentation included discussions on the introduction of a UPF certificate program in peace education for university students at the Peace Embassy, their participation in the World Peace Blessing programs as well as the upcoming 100,000-youth rally for peace in Nigeria.
The students were deeply inspired by the diversity of the UPF founders’ activities and pledged to become active members of the organization. They also discussed the formation of peace clubs in all their 37 study centers across Nigeria.
It was also proposed that UPF should organize a three-day workshop on peace education for about 120 of the forum’s members in Abuja in November 2017.
The event was attended also by Dr. George Ikpot, the secretary general of PWPA-Nigeria; Mrs. Margaret Kikunda, the secretary general of FFWPU-Nigeria; and Mr. Bernard Ochelebe, a staff member of UPF-Nigeria. The visit ended with a group photograph and individual inquiries on how to become UPF members as well as participate in the World Peace Blessing programs.
