UPF Represented in Lusophone Debate

Portugal-2019-05-24-UPF Represented in Lusophone Debate

Amadora, Portugal—The president of UPF took part in a debating session of a major Portuguese-language organization.

Sérgio Vieira, the president of UPF-Portugal, participated in the second debating session of PISCIDIL (Lusophone Diaspora Platform), which took place on May 24, 2019. The event was organized in partnership with the Gustave Eiffel Professional School and was held at its headquarters in the city of Amadora (near Lisbon).

The first session was held on Jan. 22, 2019, under the theme “My Place in the World—Individual Leadership vs. Cooperative Leadership.”

This second session had as its keynote speaker Fernando Nobre, Ph.D., a Portuguese doctor who is the president and founder of AMI (International Medical Assistance) and was a candidate in the last presidential elections. Dr. Nobre spoke on “Lusophony and Health in an Unequal World.”

The debates are part of the PISCIDIL project in the field of non-curricular training, but it is also being held in conjunction with the Curricular Training in Leadership of the Nation and Citizenship which is coordinated by the Lisbon Academy of Sciences.

The director of the Gustave Eiffel Vocational School opened the event. Besides the keynote speaker, other speakers included: Dr. António Carlos, a health delegate at the Amadora Health Center (who acted as moderator); a representative of the City Hall of Amadora; the president of PISCIDIL, Professor Alberto Araújo, who is a UPF Ambassador for Peace; UPF-Portugal President Sérgio Vieira; and a nurse from the new health professional course at this school.

There were plans to have a presence in various Portuguese-speaking countries, including: the rector of Piaget University of Guinea-Bissau; rector of Lusíada University of São Tomé and Príncipe; president of the Academy of Sciences and Humanities of Cape Verde; director of the Aileu Institute of Science and Technology in Timor-Leste; director of the Institute of Global Educators of Brasília (Brazil); secretary general of the African League (Angola); and director of the School of Cooperative and Social Management of Mozambique.

Despite some technical problems, the session went well with an excellent approach by the keynote speaker to the theme in question, given his enormous worldwide experience in service to his organization.

After his presentation, there were comments from the participants; from each of the members of the table (in particular from the representative of the municipality of Amadora). The last presentation was given by the UPF national president, and the debate was then opened to the students to present their questions.

It was possible to present the autobiography of UPF founder Rev. Dr. Sun Myung Moon to the director of the school and to Professor Dr. Fernando Nobre, and to invite both to be speakers at UPF's upcoming International Day of Families celebrations on June 16, whose theme will be "Family and Educational Values: the New Challenges of the Modern Society."
