UPF-Zambia Holds Peacebuilding Seminar for Media Professionals

Zambia-2019-09-26-UPF-Zambia Holds Peace-Building Seminar for Media Professionals

Lusaka, Zambia—UPF-Zambia, in collaboration with the Family Federation for World Peace and Unification (FFWPU), held a one-day seminar for media professionals on September 26, 2019, at UPF’s Peace Embassy. Fifteen senior journalists from both public and private institutions attended the seminar.

The theme of the seminar was “The Role of Media in Peace Building.” Its purpose was to inform and educate the media (senior journalists, news editors of online, TV, Radio, newspaper outlets) about UPF’s vision for lasting peace.

Several speakers addressed the participants. At the head table were former ambassador to Japan, Godfrey Simasiku; and Col. Lusaka Robinson, Peace Council member.

The first speaker was H.E. Godfrey Simasiku, Zambia’s former ambassador to Japan and active Peace Council member. Addressing the assembly, he encouraged participants to be objective in their reports, as the pen is mightier than the sword. He reminded them that journalists need to have high moral values and ethics.

The second speaker was the secretary general of UPF-Zambia, Rudolf Faerber. In his PowerPoint presentation titled “God’s Original Ideal of Peace,” he emphasized the value and importance of peace and the role that media practitioners must play to bring lasting peace. He also stressed the importance of protecting the environment.

Rev. David Isaac Phiri, president of FFWPU-Zambia, was the third speaker. In his PowerPoint on “Media and Education,” he presented the achievements of Rev. Dr. Sun Myung Moon and Dr. Hak Ja Han Moon in creating various media organizations. He also presented their philosophy of education.

A vote of appreciation was given by a guest, who thanked the organizers for the education that they received, which, she said, they were ready to utilize in their profession.

At the end, thirteen participants received appointments as Ambassadors for Peace.

The following are excerpts from testimonies of participants:

The seminar was very informative. As I am going home, I will take it upon myself to contribute to peace building and also building morals using my skills. As journalists, we are supposed to give information that reflects what society should be.”
Mr. Francis Mwiinga Maingaila, correspondent, Zambia 24 online media

I attended this workshop to learn more about peace building. Whenever there is peace, it will contribute to the sustainability of the country. As a journalist, I will make sure that peace prevails in our country for the benefit of our community and to ensure each and every person access to their basic needs.
Ms. Sandra Pumulo Machima, journalist, Daily Nation newspaper

It was a good workshop. We learned a lot. and I am looking forward to share what I learned. As journalists, it is important for us to go out there to gather information that is truthful and accurate, also aiming to shape what society is supposed to be.
Mr. Bulumba Collins Nyambe, journalist, Power Television
