United States—The third annual celebration of The George H.W. Bush Points of Light Awards was held September 28, 2021 in New York City and livestreamed. Hosted by ABC News anchor and correspondent Linsey Davis, the program included welcome remarks by Neil Bush, chairman of Points of Light and special appearances by Dr. Anthony Fauci, John Legend, Dana Perino and Usher Raymond, IV, and performances by the cast of the Broadway musical “Ain’t Too Proud – The Life and Times of the Temptations.”
Honorary co-chairs of the celebration included: Former Presidents Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton, George W. Bush and Barack Obama.
The 2021 awardees included: Hugh Evans, co-founder of The Oaktree Foundation and Global Citizen; Francine A. LeFrak, founder of the Francine A. LeFrak Foundation and the Same Sky Foundation Fund; and Bryan Stevenson, founder and executive director of the Equal Justice Initiative.
The inspiration behind the Points of Light goes back to the 1989 inaugural address of President George H.W. Bush who said, “I have spoken of a thousand points of light, of all the community organizations that are spread like stars throughout the nation, doing good.”
Dr. Thomas Walsh, UPF chairman, attended the gala event. UPF International has been a long-time supporter of Points of Light and its goals to promote the spirit of volunteerism and to practice living for the sake of others. Points of Light is active in 38 countries. More than 5 million volunteers donate millions of hours of service each year.
