Y. Sam Nam: Greetings at UN Forum

Beloved UN staff, Ambassadors for Peace, this year is the 70th anniversary of the UN. 70 years ago on June 26, 1945 soon after the end of World WarⅡ, representatives of 50 nations gathered together and established the United Nations.

Above all, I want to celebrate the 70th anniversary as one of the Ambassadors for Peace of UPF, which was established in 2005 to promote the spirit of the UN. At the time when my country was falling into despair due to the communist takeover of North Korea, 16 nations of the UN helped us. I would like to thank you as a citizen of Korea. My country received a great benefit from the UN, and because of that I am honored to be able to stand on this stage today.

Both in name and in reality the UN has worked for world peace for 70 years. The result of the UN’s hard work brought an end to the Cold War in the 1990s and  thus, the UN became an apostle of peace for the protection of the environment, in international dispute mediation and for famine relief and so forth.

Fifteen years ago, Rev. Moon gave a speech on “The Renewal of the UN and the Realization of a Peace Culture” in the UN headquarters building. He advocated the bicameral system, with a lower house that would speak for each nation and an upper house made up of religious leaders who would work for the benefit of all nations.

As we know, there are religious conflicts at the base of the disputes which spread after the opening of the new millennium: the Iraq and Afghanistan dispute, the war against IS terrorism, and the  dispute in Palestine.

Still Korea is the world’s last Cold War frontier. I request that the UN create an opportunity to bring about a peaceful unification of the Korean Peninsula by building the Korean Peninsula DMZ World Peace Park and by opening a 5th UN Office in the Republic of Korea.

Beloved UN staff, Ambassadors for Peace, distinguished guests,

I hope we will share our hopes for world peace and the wisest ways to fulfill that through this special seminar which celebrates the UN’s 70th anniversary. I appreciate all the efforts that the UN and the UPF headquarters made to prepare this seminar.

Once again congratulations on the 70th anniversary of the UN - May 2015.
