Y. Ohno: Address to World Summit 2017

Address to World Summit 2017, Seoul, Korea, February 1 to 5, 2017

First of all, let me congratulate all of you for this wonderful plenary.

On November 17 last year, just before our Prime Minister Mr. Shinzo Abe and the then U.S. President-elect Mr. Donald Trump were to hold their first meeting, we held a conference in Japan to launch the Japan chapter of the IAPP, at the Special Conference Hall in the House of Councillors of the Diet.

That important conference, where the vital need for parliamentarians worldwide to cooperate to enhance global peace was highlighted, was attended by 63 current members of the Diet, Japan’s national parliament, as well as the secretaries of 37 other parliamentarians.

Incidentally, the European Union, which initiated regional integration and the world order, primarily centering on the United Nations, is being seriously challenged by nation-centric, populist waves. As a result, they are facing intensified terror attacks and are plagued by regional conflicts. In order to reset the world order, we will need to go back to the original points of the UN’s collective security mechanism as well as the EU’s ideals and dynamism.

The founders of UPF, the late Rev. Sun Myung Moon and Dr. Hak Ja Han Moon, have been proposing UN reform since the early 21st century. They have also emphasized the importance of family values. Combining all past endeavors, we now have the IAPP as a common base. I truly look forward to working with you for peace on this platform. Thank you very much.
