RYS Peace Festival in South India

Madurai, South India—
Background: Since 1987 the RYS had established a working relationship with the Gandhi peace movement leaders in Tamil Nadu and with the Gandhi Museum in Madurai. Through an interfaith team of local religious leaders and activist the RYS worked with the Gandhi Museum to set up a special peace week which would involve more then ten thousand students and youth.
When: August 1993
Summary: This was a unique event for the RYS as it was a week full of local and community based events which involved the schools of the community in a variety of activities. These activities included essay contests, sport events, drama and cultural performances and an award ceremonies for youth. Immediately following a special training seminar was held.
